 2024 Queenscliff Cup

The organising authority is Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club Inc.
The event is conducted by Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club Inc. with the assistance of the Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club

1.    RULES

2.    ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

  • The regatta is open to all yachts on the register of an Australian Sailing affiliated club, who meet the requirements of Category 7 of the Australian Sailing Special Regulations, Part 1 for Racing Boats.

  • Where boats are not fitted with lifelines complying with Australian Sailing Special Regulation 3.12, crews shall always whilst afloat wear a PFD1 lifejacket.

    Late entries will be accepted up to 1000 hrs on any morning of the series on payment of the specified Late Entry Fee.

  • Entry fees include wharfage for race days and nights.

3.    FEES                                                                          

  • Entries open on the 24th February to 28th march 2024 -

    Race Series $50.00 or

    Individual Race $30.00

  • Late entry fees after 28th March 2024                            

    Race Series $60.00 

4.    CATEGORIES AND DIVISIONS

a)    Division 1 Queenscliff Cup Trophy

  • All Regatta entrants must complete all five races.

b)    Division 2 Queenscliff Commodore’s Trophy Female Helm

  • Races 3 & 4 scored for female helm performance. The helmsperson must be nominated on the entry form therefore indicating desire to compete in Division

  • There is a separate Trophy for this division.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A VESSEL TO WIN BOTH TROPHIES.

5.    SCHEDULE

  • Racing will be conducted on the 30th and 31st of March 2024 with provision for a resail on the 1st of April.

  • The scheduled time of the first warning signal each race day is 1055 hrs.

  • Two of the races will include Ladies Helm Races being races 3 & 4. To be eligible for these Races, a boat’s helm shall be female, and hold an Australian Sailing membership. The nominated female helm shall be a regular crew member of the boat entered. PHS handicaps may be adjusted to reflect the helming experience of the female helm.  

  • It is intended to run up to three races on one or more days of the Regatta for a five-race series.

6.    HANDICAPPING

  • Results will be determined based on a boat’s performance handicap allocated by QCYC.

  • Handicaps will be based on a boat’s performance in Club PHS and normalised using Yachting Victoria PHS guidelines.

7.    SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

The sailing instructions will be available after 0900 on 22nd March 2024 at the QCYC Notice Board and the QCYC website at www.qcyc.org.au

8.    VENUE

The venue is the Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club, Sand Island, Queenscliff.

9.    THE COURSES

  • The courses to be sailed will be around fixed marks in the vicinity of Queenscliff and further described in the Sailing Instructions. They will comprise of 4 shorter-approximately 5 nautical miles, and one longer of approximately 15nm in conjunction with QLYC.

  • Starting and Finishing will be conducted from the QCYC Race Committee vessel enabling a windward Start and downwind Finish.

10.  BERTHING

  • After finishing or on retirement, boats shall call QCYC on VHF 72 to advise finishing/ retirement time and be assigned a berth at QCYC.

  • Boats shall be prepared to raft up with other boats at the QCYC wharf and shall provide their own berthing lines and fenders.

  • Boats shall provide QCYC via the booking form on the Club website with details of their vessel.

11.  RADIO COMMUNICATION

  • The race committee frequency is VHF 72

  • Boats shall have a VHF radio capable of transmitting and receiving over the entire course area.

  • Boats shall keep a continuous watch on VHF 16 and 72

  • Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to mobile telephones and internet connections.

12.  PRIZES

Only yachts that have started in all 5 Races will be eligible for the Queenscliff Cup Trophy

Prizes will be given as follows:

  • Queenscliff Cup: First, second and third Performance handicap

  • Queenscliff Commodore’s Trophy: First, second and third Performance Handicap

13.  DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury, or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

14.  INSURANCE

Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of $10,000,000 per event or the equivalent and email a copy to the Club Captain Michael Phelan mphelan@bigpond.net.au at the time of entry.

If you have sanders, please bring along as that will help get the work done quicker!

HMAS GOORANGAI MEMORIALTROPHY RACE

This race, commemorating the tragic sinking of the vessel, HMAS Goorangai with 24 hands on board has a special connection to QCYC. The trophy was donated by a past member in honour of his mates on HMAS Goorangai. “It’s A Privilege” skippered by

RBYC Past Commodore Peter Strain has won the Brighton to QCYC Race, 2 years in a row. Now is the time to challenge his winning streak. All keel boats are welcome as are female helms in the Eliza Ramsden division.

Join us on Saturday 4 November, 2023 and stay free overnight to enjoy the festivities of QCYC’s 61st Opening Day. Lunch is supplied, watch the “Blessing of the Fleet” and hear the cannon roar as we break open the flags to declare the Season 2023 open.
